Emporia Public Schools' Health Services' goals are to provide safety and promote health and wellness through prevention, assessment, early intervention, treatment, accessing resources, and assistance with known health issues.

Health services are provided in a confidential, secure setting in accordance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) regulations. All visits to the health offices are documented and maintained in confidential electronic health records. In addition, a student’s physical exams, immunization records, dental cards, and other health information are maintained in the student's confidential medical file.

Over The Counter and Prescription Medications

Over-the-counter (OTC) medication forms must be filled out and have a parent signature in order to receive medications at school. OTC medications include, but are not limited to, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and loratadine.

Prescription medication forms must be filled out and have a parent and doctor signature. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to get the doctor's signature. You do not need a doctor appointment to get the doctor to get a signature. The parent/guardian may send the form to their doctor via fax, patient portal, or take the form to their clinic’s front desk and have them get it to the appropriate person.

Medications, both prescription and OTC, must be brought in the original container with a label on the medicine bottle.

All students entering the Emporia Public Schools for the first time must submit evidence of a health assessment. For preschool and kindergarten students, this physical examination should be within 12 months prior to school entry. All other students (grades 1-12) entering the school district for the first time should provide evidence of a physical examination that has been completed sometime during their school career; the most recent physical is preferred. This physical must be completed by an MD, DO, APRN, or PA-C. You may also simply ask for your doctor to print off the physical needed for school at your appointment. Nurses are required to review the piece of the physical that states “review of systems”.

KSHSAA Physical

All students who are in 7-12 grades who wish to compete in sports, marching band, or cheer, must complete a KSHSAA physical yearly. This physical must be completed after May 1st, and can be completed by a MD, DO, APRN, PA-C, or DC. EHS hosts a yearly KSHSAA physical night where this can be completed.

Will you give some medicine to my student’s coach for away trips?

When do I need to stay home?

If you have a fever, you must stay home until 24 hours fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medications (i.e. ibuprofen, acetaminophen).
Typically, if you are vomiting or have diarrhea, you need to stay home until it has been 24 hours since those symptoms have passed. At times there are exceptions to this rule. Please reach out to your health office staff to assess special circumstances.

What if I am diagnosed with an infectious disease?

It is the policy of USD 253 to follow KDHE and CDC guidelines of quarantine and isolation when diagnosed with an infectious disease. Infectious diseases include, but are not limited to, strep throat, Covid-19, influenza, and chicken pox.

Registered nurses (RN) provide care to students and staff who have been injured or have an acute illness by using the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for all students. The school nurse provides leadership for the provision of health services, promotes a healthy school environment, and acts as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health providers. The RN also supervises and determines what tasks can be delegated to the LPNs and other staff that may provide medical care.
